Thrash & Dangle Fest returns at Phoenix Rock Gym

Thrash & Dangle Fest has returned after a two-year hiatus and will be held at Phoenix Rock Gym on Saturday, April 21. Check-in starts at 3 p.m. and the competition will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.. The competition is limited to 80 competitors. Registration currently costs $70. The price increases to $80 after Tuesday, April 10.

Open category competitors will be eligible for cash prizes. Other climbers will be categorized by age and will compete for other prizes. Score will be based on four bouldering problems and one top rope route.

Sixth annual Beta Boulder Blast approaches

Beta Bouldering Gym will host their house bouldering competition Beta Boulder Blast 6 on Saturday, April 28. There will be giveaways, food, drinks, a raffle, and a $2,500 in cash prizes for podium winners in the open category. This competition will be the first to include Beta’s recent roof expansion.

Registration currently costs $40 for Beta members and $50 for non-members. The registration fee increases $10 on Sunday, April 8. Registration covers competition entry and a competition tee shirt. A food ticket for one entree, one side, and one drink from Wil’s Grill can be purchased for an additional $10. All proceeds go to Beta’s youth climbing team.

The competition schedule is as follows:

10 a.m. – Check-in/Registration Opens
11 a.m. to 1 p.m. – Youth Comp (12 and Under)
1:30 p.m. – Youth Comp Awards
2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. – Adult Competition
5 p.m. – Food and Beverages
6 p.m. – Finals Competition
The Award Ceremony will follow Finals

Phoenix Rock Gym holds mini comp

Phoenix Rock Gym (PRG) will hold a mini bouldering comp this Tuesday, August 1 starting at 4 p.m. in the upstairs bouldering area. Competitors must have a PRG membership or purchase a day pass to participate.

The competition will be onsight format, meaning climbers have one attempt with no beta and will be scored on how far they get on the climb. The competition will consist of four sections, with four minutes on and four minutes minutes off.

The upstairs bouldering area will be closed to everyone on Monday and on Tuesday until the comp. It will reopen for non-competitors on Wednesday.

Ape Index hosts Earth Day Eve Globe Crush Competition

Ape Index Rock Climbing Gym will be hosting a redpoint bouldering competition on Friday, April 21, featuring new highball routes set on the globe. The competition will include multiple rounds starting at 6 p.m., 7 p.m., and 8 p.m. Participants will register on arrival, and entry costs $10 for members and $15 for non-members (cash only, ATM on site). Cash prizes will be awarded to first, second, and third place winners.

The first 10 competitors to sign up will receive a gift from REI. There will also be raffles for private lessons and climbing gear, t-shirt giveaways, and plank contests with prizes.

Focus Climbing Center holds dyno comp

Focus Climbing Center will be holding a dyno comp Wednesday, April 19 between 4:30 and 9:30 p.m. Participants will register on arrival. Entry is free for members. Non-members require a day pass, which is $17 for adults. There will be four ability categories with dynos ranging from 5.8 to V10 in difficulty:

  • New Climber: 5.8 – V1
  • Intermediate: V2 – V4
  • Advanced: V4 – V6
  • Open: V6 – V10

Scores will be based on competitor’s five highest-scoring dynos.

The competition area is split into three sections, defined by a black line. Competitors will have six minutes in each section, followed by a six minute rest. Scores will be based on competitor’s five highest-scoring dynos, with total points as a tiebreaker. Competitors can complete as many dynos in each section as you wish. There is no penalty for falling.

Prizes will be provided by Mad Rock and Boulders on Broadway. Two participants will be randomly selected to win a certificate for a free pair of Mad Rock climbing shoes.
